Car parts on a shelf: battery, oil, filters and brake discs

Find a car part

Pick the part, check whether it's a job you can do yourself, and see parts stores near you that are open now. Rather not fit it? Approved shops supply and fit it with a written quote first.

What part do you need?

Service parts

DIY with some skill

Covers: Engine oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter

Tell the store: Your rego, and the oil grade from your handbook (for example 5W-30). Filters are matched to your engine.

Fitting: Air and cabin filters usually clip in. An oil change needs a jack, stands and a safe way to get rid of the old oil.

Part grades explained

Ask which grade you're getting before you agree to a price.

Genuine
Made for your car's maker, in its box. Usually the highest price.
OE quality
Made to the same standard as the original, often by the same factory, without the maker's logo.
Aftermarket
Made by another brand to fit your car. Quality ranges from very good to poor.
Used or recycled
Taken from another car. Good value for body parts and some electrics.
Reconditioned
A used part rebuilt and tested, like an alternator or gearbox. Ask what warranty comes with it.

Questions about parts

What do I need to buy the right part?

Your rego is usually enough. Parts stores use it to look up your exact model and engine. For tyres, use the size on the tyre wall.

Can a shop fit a part I bought myself?

Some will. Each shop card says whether it fits your own parts, asks first, or doesn't. When it does, the labour is covered but the part isn't. If the shop supplies the part too, both are covered.

Should I fit brake parts myself?

We don't recommend it. Brakes are safety parts and are checked at your WOF. An approved shop gives you a written quote first and stamps the job in your service log.
